Katarina Witt started ice skating when she was five. When her talent for skating became more apparent her admission was granted at an Karl-Marx-Stadt school that is geared towards youngsters with athletic aptitude. This was where she met her coach Jutta Muller. Witt became a star in 1982, when she was second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt caught the eye of the world and she's dominated her sport ever since. Olympic success at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female gold medal for figure skating in an extremely close contest. In a tighter competition the following year, Witt won the medal. While she was unable to win the free-skating contest, gold was awarded for her efforts on the compulsory figures as well as the program in short form. Witt was the first repeated medalist in figure skating for women after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who made it big in the film industry acting, then returned for figure skating, competed at Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd despite not winning an award. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
